First Service in George Town
By the grace of the Lord, the first service in George Town went well. The afternoon service in Launceston ended at 5:00pm (ish). Right after the service, we packed up the Bibles and Psalm books and headed out for George Town. We ate sandwiches for dinner in the car on the way up. There was not much traffic and we made it up to George Town by 5:45 or so.
I set up our sign by the road and opened up the Memorial Hall. The chairs were out in stacks and I only needed to unstack them and line them up. The podium was already in place. I set up a table for the Bibles, Psalm books, and some information about our church by the door.
Six people came, not counting Martha, Julia, and me. The six folk were people we had met before and most attended the Bible studies in George Town. We had a very similar service to the ones we hold in Launceston (prayer, Psalm, 1st Scripture reading, announcements, offering, 2nd Psalm, 2nd Scripture reading, prayer, sermon, 3rd Psalm, prayer, and doxology). The only difference was that we sang two Psalms instead of three. I decided to make the minor change after my counterpart in Hobart (Iain Smith) recommended it. Singing two Psalms instead of three can be an easier introduction to singing the Psalms if it's all new. The sermon was on Luke 10:38-42 on the one thing needful: hearing the Word of God.
To some, six people may seem like a very small beginning, but for this situation, six people was a good beginning. I expected fewer. We do not know how things will develop, but we have had encouraging comments from those who attended and more people have mentioned a desire to come.
Thank you very much for your prayers and keep them coming.
The Lord Jesus be with you all.
